A heated pattern plate 7, having patterns 7.7 attached to it, has two sides at right angles to one another 7.1, 7.2 (Fig. 2) accurately machined to form abutment surfaces which abut accurately machined abutment surfaces 1.11, 1.21 of a pattern plate carrier 1 (of a foundry moulding machine) to locate the pattern plate within its carrier. The abutment surfaces are forced together by a fluid expanded elastic tube 8 nested within a groove 1.41 extending around those two walls 1.3, 1.4 without abutment surfaces, of the pattern plate carrier. Alternatively, pistons and cylinders (not shown) mounted on the walls 1.3 and 1.4 are used to force the abutment surfaces together. Four bolts 10 pass through the pattern plate assembly 4, 5, 6, 7 (which is vertically movable on the bolts) and are anchored to the base 1.5 of the carrier 1. The lower surfaces of the bolt heads 10.1 are exactly level with the upper surface 1.61 of the carrier. The part 4.2 has large bores 4.3 with pistons 4.6 mounted in them, and the bores 4.3 are interconnected by passages 4.4 leading to a pressurized fluid supply by a connection 12. The pistons 4.6 act against the base 1.5 forcing the part 4.2 upwards and the pattern plate against the bolt head 10.1 thereby locating it vertically. A further embodiment (not shown) includes four separate rectangular pattern plates within a rectangular carrier, all located within the holder by an expandable elastic tube in a groove around the four inner walls of the carrier. Hydraulic or pneumatic pressurization may be employed. |
