A transparent vessel contains two immiscible components which on being heated circulate to produce displays; one component is mineral oil; the other is water containing a liquid water-miscible additive to raise its thermal coefficient of expansion. This is stated to provide greater stability and shorter warm-up time. As described, the first component is " Ondina 17 " (Registered Trade Mark) with paraffin, carbon tetrachloride, dye and paraffin wax; the watermiscible additive is glycerol, ethylene-, polyethylene-, or polypropylene-glycol to the extent of 30%.
