PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for generating subframe images to reduce lightness/darkness for a reproduction result even if the subframe images generated by frame rate conversion are reproduced. SOLUTION: A frame rate converting unit 101 generates a plurality of subframe images from a captured frame image. Gradation converting units 102, 103 perform gradation conversion on the subframe images. A switching unit 104 sequentially outputs the subframe images on which the gradation conversion has been performed by the gradation converting units 102, 103. In the gradation conversion, the same gradation conversion is applied to a pixel whose luminance value is smaller than or equal to a threshold in each of the subframe images, and different gradation conversion is applied to each of the subframe images for a pixel having a luminance value larger than the threshold.
