PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element low in drive voltage and excelling in drive durability. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element includes at least two organic layers each including a luminescent layer between an anode and a cathode, and includes, between the cathode and the luminescent layer, an organic layer containing (a) at least one aromatic compound having a LUMO energy level ≤2.1 eV, and (b) at least one metal oxide represented by the following formula (1): (Ba<SB>l</SB>Sr<SB>m</SB>Ca<SB>n</SB>)O<SB>x</SB>.
