PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine improving output by effectively generating and maintaining a tumble flow and also preventing knocking. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine includes a cylinder bore 1, a piston 3 and a cylinder head 4, and a combustion chamber 8 in the cylinder head 4 is formed into a trapezoidal conical shape having an inclined roof surface 9. The crown surface of the cylinder head 4 is formed with a main recessed portion 18 surrounded by a squish surface 15. The main recessed portion 18 is composed of a first area 22 on a side close to an exhaust port 13, a second area 23 on a side close to an intake port 11, and a third area 24 positioned between the first and second areas. The maximum radius of curvature R1 of the first area 22 is set to 1 to 0.85 times the radius R0 of the cylinder bore 1, the maximum radius of curvature R2 of the second area is set to about 2.5 to 4 times the R1, and the maximum radius of curvature R3 of the third area 24 is set to several times the R2.
