PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can accurately detect deviation of magnification in a main scanning direction, regardless of attachment precision of a registration sensor. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an optical beam scanning device allowing a light deflection unit to deflect and scan a light beam emitted from a light source and deflect the deflected and scanned light beam and then, a post-deflection optical unit to form the image of the deflected and scanned light beam on a surface to be scanned. Further, the image forming apparatus includes a horizontal synchronization optical unit to which the light beam deflected by the light deflection unit is applied and which detects that the light beam reaches first and second predetermined positions separated from each other by a predetermined distance in the main scanning direction and a registration measuring image writing control unit which controls formation of the latent image of a registration measuring image with reference to the first predetermined position and the latent image of a registration measuring image with reference to the second predetermined position.
