摘要
1,111,142. Automatic character reading. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. 16 July, 1965 [28 Aug., 1964], No. 30436/65. Heading G4R. In a reader for characters formed of vertical and horizontal strokes, the characters are scanned by a series of vertical scan lines, the scan lines being divided into a plurality of equal sections commencing with a first section given by the detection of a first vertical stroke and means for restarting the division of the scan lines when the first vertical stroke is detected in the next scan in a higher section than the first. This prevents a false start position in the case of a badly printed character, Fig. 2a, having a bulge on one side. The video signals are shifted into an 11-stage shift register (80, Fig. 3a, not shown) under the control of timing pulses, 31 to each scan. The character occupies about 14 timing pulses so that at a particular instant the register contains the greater part of a section through the character. The stages of the shift register are applied to gating circuits (90, 110) which detect the presence of a medium vertical stroke, MVS and a small white gap, SWG. The medium vertical stroke signal, MVS is used to start the recognition circuits and is passed through a delay (202, Fig. 3B, not shown) to set a flipflop (152). The " 1 " output of this flip-flop enables a gate (153) to allow timing pulses to pass to a 5-stage ring counter (154) which divides the scan into groups of five pulses each forming a section. The sections are counted by a second counter (156). Section S1A, Fig. 2a, therefore starts at the bulge on the left-hand side of the " 9." Sections S2A, S3A, S4A, S5A and S6A follow cyclically. If in the next scan (2) the first medium vertical stroke appears in Section S1A, this sectioning is retained in every scan thereafter but if as in this case, the MVS signal in the next scan appears in Section S6A, the counters (154 and 156) are reset and start again on the now MVS signal, the new division being shown at S1B, S2B, &c. The successive scans are counted in twos to divide the character into right, centre and left zones. Appropriate outputs of the section counter (156) are used to divide the character into upper and lower zones. The zone signals and the MVS signal are gated together to determine the location of the medium vertical strokes of a character. These indications are combined with the short white gap signals, and further signals indicating the absence of a long white gap, in a recognition circuit to identify the character.
