<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for controlling an amount of displacement, capable of controlling at a time the displacements of a pattern position caused on printed matter in a vertical direction, a horizontal direction and a twisting direction, and dealing with displacements of the pattern position that constantly change with time. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus for controlling an amount of displacement corrects the amount of displacement of a pattern position on printed matter caused by a multicolor printer. The apparatus obtains picked up image data Di obtained by picking up a group LM of pattern position displacement measuring marks comprising measuring marks of different colors printed on both side ends in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the direction of conveyance of the printed matter.
