[Also in Division F3] In order to align discontinuous elongated metallic heat conductors 6 within a viscous propellent matrix 5, the matrix is passed through a passageway 1 in which transverse alignment means 2, 3, 4 are arranged. Such means may comprise groups of parallel members 2a, 3a, 4a, each group being displaced with relation to the others. The members 2a &c. may be of wire or of bands arranged edge-on to the flow. Alignment means in the form of a spiral band and a screen may also be used, or a number of screens of decreasing mesh size. The heat conductors are aligned in the direction of flame propagation and increase the burning rate in this direction. Alternatively the alignment means may be moved relatively to a stationary container holding the matrix. The metallic heat conductors may be in the form of short wires or flat strips, preferably ¢-inch or less in length, and may be of Al, Mg, Be, Zr, Ti, Ag, Cu, or alloys thereof. A coating of a self-oxidant or non- oxidant composition may be applied to the metal conductors. In examples the viscous propellent mixture comprises a polybutadiene binder, ammonium perchlorate, aluminium powder, a burning rate catalyst, and elongated aluminium heat conductors; the polybutadiene may be carboxy-terminated. An inhibitor casing may be applied to the matrix without disturbing the orientation of the heat conductors by various procedures which prevent relative movement between the matrix and the casing (see Division F3). The propellent grain may be cured by heating under pressure.
