<PICT:1077222/C1/1> In a method for the production of flat glass by the "float" technique, an auxiliary support for the formed ribbon is provided and can be inserted between it and the normal conveyer rollers to protect them at a time when they are liable to injury or contamination. Preferably, a stainless steel plate 34 is mounted on rollers 37 for movement along guides 36 transversely of the glass ribbon 29. The leading edge of the plate 34 is rounded as at 38 (Fig. 4, not shown), so that it will easily slide under the ribbon and over the rollers 30, 31, lifting the ribbon therefrom. In an alternatively embodiment, a pair of stainless steel arcuate shields 39 (Fig. 6, not shown) are mounted for pivotal movement about the axes of rollers 30, 31. |
