PURPOSE: A composition containing Polygonum Cuspidatum extract or fraction or stilbene compounds derived from the extract or fraction is provided to prevent or treat common cold. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating common cold contains Polygonum Cuspidatum extract or fraction as an active ingredient. The extract is isolated using water, low alcohol of 1-4 carbon atoms, or mixture solvent thereof. The low alcohol is methanol, ethanol, or butanol. The fraction is water fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, n-hexane fraction, or chloroform fraction. The extract or fraction contains stilbene compound of chemical formula 1 as an active ingredient. An external use skin formulation contains the composition. The external use formulation is manufactured in the form of ointments, lotions, sprays, patches, creams, powders, suspensions, or gels.
