PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device making an appropriate ground color compensation in response to the ground color of each manuscript surface corresponding to both sides in forming a pair of both sides of an output image. SOLUTION: When a second value obtained for a second manuscript surface is a value within the predetermined range including a first value obtained for a first manuscript surface, a ground color of image data of the second manuscript surface is determined to be compensated when a first determination means determines to compensate the ground color of the image data of the first manuscript surface. Meanwhile when the first determination means determines not to compensate the ground color of the first manuscript surface, the ground color of the image data of the second manuscript surface is determined not to be compensated. Thus either of the ground color compensation for the image data of both sides of the manuscript surface, or no ground color compensation for the image data of both of the manuscript surface is made, and the background colors of the output image of the first manuscript surface are prevented from being unnaturally different from the background color of the output image of the second manuscript surface.
