PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of using a sensor that only detects whether or not an ADF cover is completely closed, for improved usability. SOLUTION: If it is detected that an ADF cover is not closed when starting scanning by automatic original feeding, image reading is performed with a rear side CIS to generate image data (S110), and then the white level of the image data is determined for an intensity of external light entering the rear side CIS. If the white level is below a predetermined threshold value (S115:No), the ADF cover is determined to be in semi-open state, and scanning is started by automatic original feeding (S125).
