PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device wherein liquid crystal molecules are stably aligned in spite of long branch portions, and a method for manufacturing the liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: Each pixel includes: a liquid crystal layer containing a nematic liquid crystal material having a negative dielectric anisotropy; a first electrode; a second electrode facing the first electrode via the liquid crystal layer; a pair of vertical alignment films provided between the first electrode and the liquid crystal layer and between the second electrode and the liquid crystal layer; and a pair of alignment sustaining layers constituted of photopolymers formed on surfaces on the liquid crystal layer side of the pair of vertical alignment films. The first electrode has a linear trunk portion and a plurality of branch portions extending from the trunk portion in one direction in parallel with each other, and the plurality of branch portions have a length of≥100μm, and a pretilt direction of liquid crystal molecules located between the plurality of branch portions is parallel or not parallel with the one direction and is defined by the alignment sustaining layers.
