PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an overhead valve type engine in which mist-like oil is not excessively supplied from a crank chamber to a valve gear mechanism chamber by a simple structure. SOLUTION: The overhead valve type engine 1 includes: a second breather passage 55 provided in a crankcase 4 having one end connected to the crank chamber 41 and extending toward a cylinder block 3 in a cylinder axis 7 direction, and into which oil mist in a crank chamber 41 flows; a first breather passage 54 provided in a cylinder block 3 having one end connected to a valve gear mechanism chamber 50, and extending toward the crankcase 4 in the cylinder axis 7 direction; and a third breather passage 56 having a recessed portion 563 recessed in a direction toward the crankcase 4 from the cylinder block 3 and formed between the crankcase 4 and the cylinder block 3, the third breather passage 56 being connected to the other end of the second breather passage 55 and the other end of the first breather passage 54, and making the second breather passage 55 and the first breather passage 54 communicate with each other.
