PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new aromatic compound having characteristics such as high heat resistance and high refractive index. SOLUTION: The method for producing the new aromatic compound represented by formula (1) includes reacting a compound represented by formula (2) with a compound represented by formula (3) in the presence of an acid catalyst. In the formulas, ring X is a ring obtained by removing two oxo groups from o-quinone; R1is a substituent; p is an integer of≥0; ring Z is an aromatic hydrocarbon ring; R2is alkylene; q is an integer of≥0; r is an integer of≥1; R3is a substituent; and s is an integer of≥0.
