Disclosed is a process for producing methanol from a water-soluble organic compound having two or more oxygen atoms and water, particularly glycerin and water, which consumes little energy and is advantageous with respect to cost. Specifically disclosed is a process for producing methanol from a water-soluble organic compound having two or more oxygen atoms and water, which is characterized in that at least a step in which a methanol synthesis catalyst (A) comprising copper oxide, zinc oxide and silicon oxide is present is involved in the process and all of steps involved in the process are carried out at temperatures of 200 to 500°C.
