An additive for a nickel electro-plating bath comprises an aqueous solution containing 20 to 50 g/1 of either the mono- or the bis-#-hydroxyethyl ether of 2-butyne-1 :4-diol and a water-soluble nickel compound, e.g. nickel sulphate, chloride or sulphamate, as a mould inhibitor.
