The invention relates to an electronic shelf label (11) and an electronic labelling system including an electronic shelf label, the label comprising a display (35) for displaying information related to a product, a receiving means (31) for receiving commands and/or data from a central unit (33), a control unit for controlling the display and the receiving means. A timer (39) is provided for measuring the time passed since the last message was received from the central unit, and a comparing means is arranged for comparing the measured time to a predetermined threshold time. The control unit is adapted to initiate a predetermined action if the measured time exceeds the threshold time. The invention also relates to a electronic labelling system comprising such an electronic shelf label.
