An artificial ligament 318 has a biasing element such as a spring 340 at one end to control its effective stiffness. It may also have a tensioning device such as a screw threaded adjuster collar 320. Alternatively, the ligament may have only the tension adjuster. A hollow stem 302 may be inserted into a bone and the tensioning and biasing means mounted within it. The artificial ligament may be secured by a knot 335 which prevents it from pulling through an aperture 350 in the biasing means. Also disclosed is a prosthesis (figure 7) incorporating an artificial ligament and a ligament support (70, figure 7) that influences the line of action of the ligament by causing it to bend. |
