A fabric is produced on a straight bar knitting- machine which has yarn control elements operating at the selvedges of the fabric to hold the selvedge loops SL and newly laid selvedge yarn NY spaced from each other while the needles operate to press the needle beards and land the selvedge loops on the beards. In one embodiment the elements comprise members 2 each having a projection 2a, each member being displaceable towards and away from the selvedge needle and also displaceable sideways to catch the yarn. The element and its mounting as a whole is also displaceable sideways in synchronism with widening or narrowing displacements to follow the selvedge. The element 2 is slidably mounted in a box 4, (Fig. 3) mounted on rods 5, 6 and is reciprocable towards and away from the selvedge needle by a bell crank lever 8 having one arm 8b projecting between operating bars 9, 10 displaceable up and down by a cam. Sideways displacement of the box 4, to engage element 2 with the yarn at the end of the yarn carrier traverse is effected by a block 12 (Fig. 4) slidably mounted between stops 13, 14 fixed on the rod 5. Cam faced bosses 15,18 on the stops engage similar bosses 16, 17 on a sleeve 19 which is oscillable by an arm 17a engaged by an operating bar 20. Rotation of the sleeve 19 in one direction causes the boss 17 to act on boss 18 to displace the rod 5, and element 2, outwardly of the selvedge, while on rotation in the other direction boss 16 acts on boss 16 to return the rod 5 and the element 2 in the yarn deflecting direction. The block 20 engages a screw 23 which holds the block stationary to allow the rod 5 to be moved, and which is operable to adjust the position of the block during narrowing or widening. In a modification the yarn control element has a square end and is not provided with a lateral motion to engage the yarn. |
