1,264,983. Grafted perhalogenated olefin polymers. AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE. 18 March, 1969 [18 March, 1968], No. 14234/69. Heading C3G. A graft polymer comprises a perhalogenated olefin polymer substrate and a superstrate derived from both a carboxyl group containing monomer and a basic group containing monomer which is a vinyl pyridine or amino-substituted vinyl aromatic monomer, at least one of said two types of groups being substantially neutralized. The graft polymer is prepared by contacting the polymer substrate with either the acid or basic monomer, subjecting the polymer to ionizing radiation, neutralizing the acid or basic groups, contacting the resulting neutralized graft polymer with the other type of monomer and subjecting it to ionizing radiation, preferably followed by neutralization of the groups present in said other monomer. Specified acid monomers are acrylic, methacrylic and maleic acids. In the examples polytetrafluoroethylene is (i) grafted with acrylic acid, using gamma-radiation, and treated with potassium hydroxide and then (ii) grafted with 4-vinylpyridine, using said radiation, followed by neutralization with hydrochloric acid, or stages (i) and (ii) are reversed. |
