[Also in Division F2] In a milling machine having a knee K, a saddle S and table T, providing the latter with capability of movement in three mutually perpendicular directions, gearing for applying feed drive to shafts VS, CS and LS for vertical, cross or longitudinal feed of the table is carried by only four shafts VD, C and L and is normally driven from motor M and shaft O through worm gearing D1. Change speed gear train D2, C1, L1 provides for nine different speeds and provides for continuous drive of shaft LS whenever the feed gearing is operative. Sliding dog clutch L2 is engageable alternatively with gears L3 and L4 to reverse the drive to gear sleeve D3, D4 slidably mounted on which is a selector gear D5 which meshes alternatively with gear C3 or V2 to provide cross or vertical feed. Motor M is reversible and connected, Fig. 5, to shafts D and L through respective one-way clutches D11, L51, the normal feed drive being through clutch D11 to shaft D and through the reduction gearing to shaft L. When the motor rotates in the reverse direction however shaft L is driven directly for rapid traverse of the table T, the shaft D and reduction gearing being by-passed. The machine also includes a trip mechanism for automatically stopping the table in two directions of movement, the mechanism including a manually operable bar 2, Fig. 3, axial movement of which shifts the selector gear D5 to determine whether feed is in the cross or vertical direction or to place the selector gear in a neutral position, while angular movement of the bar 2 determines the direction of feed by means of a lever 11 adapted to control the sliding dog clutch L2. Trip bars 10, 19 for vertical and cross traverse movement carry stop collars 18 engageable by dogs on the machine, only one of these bars being operably connected to the bar 2 at a time. A gate 4 for handle 3 controls the angular and axial positions of shaft 2 determining the axis and direction in which movement is to take place.
