The invention comprises a compound of the formula <FORM:1046055/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are hydrogen or lower (C1-C6) alkyl; X is <FORM:1046055/C2/2> Y is <FORM:1046055/C2/3> Z is <FORM:1046055/C2/4> <FORM:1046055/C2/5> is <FORM:1046055/C2/6> <FORM:1046055/C2/7> is <FORM:1046055/C2/8> and a method of preparing steroids of the formula <FORM:1046055/C2/9> wherein R, R1, <FORM:1046055/C2/100> and <FORM:1046055/C2/111> are as defined above is <FORM:1046055/C2/122> which comprises contacting a steroid having the formula <FORM:1046055/C2/133> wherein R, R1, R2, Y, <FORM:1046055/C2/144> and <FORM:1046055/C2/155> are as defined above with ammonia in the presence of a solvent and subsequently hydroxylamino-O-sulphonic acid or haloamines at a temperature below +40 DEG C. and subsequently treating the reaction product with an oxidizing agent, e.g. silver oxide, and recovering said steroid therefrom. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the above compounds and having anabolic and androgenic activity are administered orally and parenterally. |
