[Also in Divisions D1-D2] A carrier device having spaced opening 32 for co-operation with headed studs 30 whereby the device is attachable to the roof or boot lid 4 of an automobile comprises an elongated channelshaped member 2 to which are pivoted at respective ends of the channel 14 two bracket mem- 18, 20 which in closed positions (18 in Fig. 2) lie towards one another within the channel 14 and in open positions (20 in Fig. 2) project therefrom substantially at right angles. A cover piece 36 is also secured to the elongated member 2 between the bracket members 18, 20 in their closed positions to thereby form a substantially continuous elongated surface over the elongated member 2 which has the overall appearance of a trim strip. Spring members 50, 52 urge bracket members 18, 20 towards their open position but U-shaped spring clips 56 are used to hold the bracket members 18, 20 in their closed positions against the action of spring members 50, 52. The headed studs 32 are welded to a sheet metal panel such as a boot lid 7 and clip members 34 interposed between base 16 and the heads of studs 32 secure the member 2 on to the boot lid 4, a gasket 17 being disposed between the member 2 and the boot lid 4. A plurality of such devices may be fitted to the boot lid to accommodate specialized cargoes such as skis. |
