A starter motor secondary battery may be recharged sufficiently for operation of the motor, by connecting thereto an activatable inert auxiliary battery having when operative a voltage substantially greater than that of the secondary battery and having an electrical capacity substantially less than that of the secondary battery, and activating the auxiliary battery when required. The auxiliary battery may comprise PbO 2 positive plates, Zn negative plates, and H 2 SO 4 electrolyte, which is kept in a compartment separate from the plates until the battery is activated. The connection may be by means of a plug inserted into an automobile cigarette lighter fitting. |
