The method involves sending a media access control (MAC) address resolution request (12) on a local communication network (5), to destination of a predetermined internet protocol (IP) address by automation equipment (10). A normal operating mode and a test operating mode of the automation equipment is selected, where the selection is carried out by comparing a predetermined MAC address with MAC address received by the automation equipment in response (21) to the resolution request.
