PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately calculate the length of a recording material carried in time less than a pulse interval of a pulse signal output means, in a technology for measuring the length of the carried recording material. SOLUTION: Two edge sensors for detecting the edge of carried paper are arranged on both sides of a length measuring roll attached with a rotary encoder. PeriodsΔt<SB>1</SB>andΔt<SB>2</SB>, when one of output of these two edge sensors is H, are measured, and a carrying speed of the paper in theΔt<SB>1</SB>andΔt<SB>2</SB>is provided using this measured value and a dimension of the interval between the two edge sensors.
