PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an additive to be added to a pigment coating liquid for obtaining coated paper for printing use excellent in print glossiness and ink impressionability in the coated paper such as to be used in gravure printing or offset printing. SOLUTION: The additive for a pigment coating liquid, to be compounded in the pigment coating liquid used for coating layer formation, is provided, comprising an aqueous resin solution obtained by solution polymerization. In the aqueous resin solution, the resin component is a copolymer obtained by polymerizing monomer components comprising (A) 15-40 mass% of a radical-polymerizable monomer having a tertiary amino group and (B) 60-85 mass% of a radical-polymerizable hydrophobic monomer, wherein 30 mol% or more of the tertiary amino groups in the copolymer are quaternarized.
