The method involves determining a track section lying before a motor vehicle with characteristics relevant for overtaking maneuvers. Information about the track section is issued with characteristics to a driver. Time equivalent from actual vehicle speed and preset distance value are determined from vehicle location to the track section. A point of time of display of the information is determined as the time period corresponding to the time equivalent removed from computed arrival time to the track section, where the information is released on certain time. An independent claim is also included for a system for informing of a driver of a motor vehicle about characteristics of track sections of a driving route lying in driving direction in front of the motor vehicle.
