PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having a large discharge capacity and superior lifetime performance, and to provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery which uses the material. SOLUTION: The anode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery contains a compound, having a crystal lattice structure expressed in general formula: M<SB>x</SB>P (M: a transition metal x≥1), and is indexed as a C22(Fe<SB>2</SB>P)-type by Strukturbericht designation. The diameter of the crystal of the compound is, preferably, in the range of 6.8 to 36 nm. There a re a nonaqueous secondary battery having the anode for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery containing the negative active material, and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery equipped with the negative electrode.
