PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent removal of a USB memory from being forgotten as much as possible, even if an image reading apparatus is used in a use pattern for storing image data of a read original into the USB memory, and to prevent data from being used illegally by others as much as possible even if a user forgets to remove the USB memory. SOLUTION: When the USB memory M is not removed until a predetermined period of time passes after the image data generated by read operation of an image read unit 16 have been stored in the USB memory M, the USB memory M displays a guide screen for urging enforcement of removal work, the image data are transferred from the USB memory M to an internal storage unit 210, the transferred image data are authenticated by an authentication processing unit 203 to input user information for returning to the USB memory M, and, after that, a guide screen G2 is displayed continuously until the USB memory M is removed.
