The method involves assigning a binary identifier to a valid state of a finite state machine. A bit error of detected actual and future state identifiers (Z, Z+1) is recognized by a corrector (10) by comparing the detected identifiers with preset valid state identifiers. A defective state identifier is replaced by one valid identifier with less hamming distance. An internal or external error signal (Err) of the machine is generated by the corrector during determining a higher number of bit errors in the detected identifiers as a preset number of correctable bit errors per state identifier. An independent claim is also included for a finite state machine for computer systems, including a configurable logical unit.
