The method involves executing engine stop and start of an internal combustion engine automatically by an automatic stop/start- system, and varying frequency of the automated execution of engine stop and start. A stop and go condition is determined based on operating parameters of the stop/start- system for determining stop and go condition parameters. Variation of the frequency of the automated execution of engine stop and start is carried out by reduction of the frequency when the stop and go condition parameters are determined.
