The element has an indicating unit for indicating function identification and operating conditions and including a film insert (5) formed as a three-dimensional shaped surface layer. The insert is transparent, scratch-resistant, light stable and partly printed. The insert establishes a stable peripheral area and a final surface of the element. A transparent layer (6) is made of a light scattering material and formed as an optical waveguide. An opaque layer (7) in areas of the insert and the transparent layer are covered to protect against uncontrolled light aperture. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a control element for inclusion in a front panel and operating a device in a motor vehicle.
