PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally adjust the tone of an image while suppressing reduction in luminance.

SOLUTION: The image display apparatus includes: a video signal control unit 120 which receives input of image signals and converts the same to signals to alternately display an image for the right eye and an image for the left eye; a liquid crystal display panel 134 into which the signals converted in the video signal control unit 120 are input and which alternately displays the image for the right eye and the image for the left eye; a backlight 136 which illuminates the liquid crystal display panel 134 from a back surface; a shutter control unit 122 which generates timing signals indicating the open periods of liquid crystal shutters 200a and 200b for the right eye and the left eye to spectacles for appreciation 200 to relatively change the open periods of liquid crystal shutters to the light emission timing of the backlight 136; and a backlight control unit 128 which allows the backlight 136 to emit light in a shorter period than the open periods of the liquid crystal shutters according to switching between the image for the right eye and the image for the left eye.
