PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a lithium ion secondary battery, capable of constructing a lithium ion secondary battery having better safety performance and high reliability. SOLUTION: The separator for a lithium ion secondary battery includes a porous resin base material 200 and an insulating ceramic layer 300 applied to at least a first surface of the porous resin base material. The resin base material 200 has a porous polyethylene layer 210 as an internal layer and first and second porous polypropylene layers 220 and 230 as an external layer. The ceramic layer 300 includes at least an inorganic filler and a binder. The resin base material 200 includes a surface-modified layer 221 in an interface with the ceramic layer 300. The value of ratio α/β is in a range of 0.015-0.055 in an infrared spectrum reflected and measured with respect to the modified surface, wherein α is an absorbance of C=C bond and β is an absorbance of C-H bond.
