The device has a sensor (130) for measuring brake pipe pressure in a brake pipe (140), and a start-stop-device (110) for automatically switching off and/or starting of an internal combustion engine. An adaptive speed control device (120) controls vehicle speed depending on sensor-supporting detected environment information. The start-stop-device and the adaptive speed control device are coupled with one another such that automatic switching and/or starting of the combustion engine takes place directly by the start-stop-device depending on the brake pipe pressure measured by the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle.
