PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve charge and discharge cycle characteristics of a lithium secondary battery.

SOLUTION: The negative electrode for lithium secondary battery 100 includes a current collector 1 and a negative electrode active material layer 5 formed on the surface of the current collector 1. The negative electrode active material layer 5 has silicon and carbon as a main component, and the ratio x of the atomic number of carbon to silicon in the negative electrode active material layer 5 is 0.03 or more and 1.0 or less, and the ratio R of the number of couplings of silicon-carbon bond to the number of couplings of carbon-carbon bond of the negative electrode active material layer 5 is larger than 0 (zero) and less than 2.5.
