PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having an element structure that reduces damage to an organic light-emitting layer etc. during electrode formation and facilitates electric charge injection into the organic light-emitting layer etc. from an electrode.

SOLUTION: The organic EL element has an organic layer 3 containing a light-emitting substrate held between an anode 2 and a cathode 5, wherein a transparent protective layer 4 containing a bipolar charge transporting organic compound and an electron-accepting compound, is provided between the anode 2 or cathode 5, and the organic layer 3. At this time, it is preferable that a conductive layer 6' including a metal layer having a small work function is formed between the organic layer 3 and transparent protective layer 4, and it is preferable that the conductive layer 6' comprises a first conductive layer 6a as the metal layer having the small work function and a second conductive layer 6b at least containing an element that belongs to a group I or II of an element periodic law.
