The method involves recognizing software threads for an energy savings mode. Non-assign software threads are assigned such that the threads are executed on a set of processor cores of a multi-core processor (108), where the set of processor cores is less than total processor cores of the multi-core processor. Power states for the processor cores are reduced in the set of processor cores. Energy and heat characteristics for the processor cores of the multi-core processor are recognized by a power management module (102). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for energy savings operation of a multi-core processor (2) a product comprising a computer-readable storage medium for implementing a method for energy savings operation of a multi-core processor.
