PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an occupant detection system and an occupant detection method improved in robustness of occupant determination and reduced in false determination caused by disturbance or the like. SOLUTION: The occupant detection system 100 includes a field generation section 11 for generating a minute electric field on the periphery of an antenna electrode of a sensor 4, a current detection section 15 for detecting a current flowing based on the electric field, and a control section (determination circuit 20) for determining the seating state of an occupant based on signal data related to the current taken in from the current detection section 15 and flowing to the antenna electrode. The determination circuit 20 determines whether or not a human has moved, based on the signal data indicating the possibility of movement of the human, and maintains threshold data when it determines that the human has moved, or updates the threshold data to expand a determination zone for the occupant when it determines that the human has not moved.
