The present disclosure relates to recombinant carbonic anhydrase polypeptides having improved properties as compared to a naturally occurring ?-class carbonic anhydrase from Methanosarcina thermophila and uses of the polypeptides for the sequestration of carbon dioxide as well as for the release of carbon dioxide from a composition comprising bicarbonate. Also provided are polynucleotides encoding the recombinant carbonic anhydrase polypeptides and host cells capable of expressing the recombinant carbonic anhydrase polypeptides.
