PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accelerate operation timing of an overheat shut off device to improve safety. SOLUTION: In this water heater 1, a heat shield plate 29 is provided on the inner face of a back cover 3 of a casing 2, and a temperature fuse 31 of the overheat shut off device is transversely held in a central upper part of the heat shield plate 29. Bent pieces 30, 30 closing between the casing 2 and a heat exchanger 8 excluding a backup plate 24 positioned immediately above the temperature fuse 31 and guiding hot air within the casing 2 to the temperature fuse 31 side are formed at an upper end of the heat shield plate 29.
