PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning agent for a magnetic disk substrate; wherein the dispersibility of particles detached from the surface of a substrate is good because the cleaning agent has reasonable etching properties while having excellent detergency to residues derived from a coolant, thereby achieving excellent particle removal performance. SOLUTION: The cleaning agent for a magnetic disk substrate contains a nonionic surfactant (A) represented by general formula (1) below, wherein m/(n+m+k) is 0.20-0.55, and an aliphatic alkanolamine (B) as indispensable components. (1) HO-(EO)<SB>n</SB>-(PO)<SB>m</SB>-(EO)<SB>k</SB>-H, wherein EO represents an oxyethylene group; PO represents an oxypropylene group; (EO)<SB>n</SB>, (PO)<SB>m</SB>, and (EO)<SB>k</SB>represent ethylene oxide and propylene oxide added in a block form; and n, m, and k each represents a number of 20 or more, and n+m+k is 60-200.
