The method involves controlling combustion of particles in a particulate filter (42) during generation process by controlling oxygen content in exhaust gas. Temperature of the exhaust gas is regulated by a component of an exhaust after-treatment system (40). Controller interferences are temporally coordinated for regulation of the oxygen content and/or temperature of the component of the exhaust after-treatment system by post-injection before pre-aged oxidation catalyst (41) is set upstream to the particulate filter in a direction of flow of the exhaust gas. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling regeneration of particulate filter in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine.
