A method of applying a hot-melt composition having a reinforcing core to a substrate comprises applying traction to the reinforcing core, heating the composition so as to at least partially melt it and applying the composition to the substrate. Apparatus for applying the composition to sealing the joint 9 in a metal structure 10, 11, e.g. a motor vehicle, comprises a handle 3 on which are mounted a reel 6 and a cylinder 2 carrying a metal tongue 1 for applying pressure to the composition 7. The tongue 1 is heated, for melting the composition, by an electric heater in the cylinder 2. After the joint has been filled, the composition can be severed by pinching it between the tongue and the plate-edge. The reinforcing core may be a textile, or a thermoplastic material having a melting point above that of the sealing composition, e.g. nylon, a polyvinylidene chloride, a polyester (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) or a polyacrylonitrile. |
