Sponge iron is manufactured by heating a charge containing one or more iron oxides and carburized iron that contains 25-40% C. as reducing agent. The carburized iron may be obtained by treating iron oxides and/or sponge iron (or iron powder obtained therefrom) with hydrocarbons, e. g. natural gas, at 850-950‹ C.; the by-product hydrogen may be used as atmosphere in the main reduction heating, e. g. at 1, 000‹ C. for 4-5 hours. The ratio of carburized iron to ore may be 1:3À3. Other reducing agents, e. g. anthracite or coke fines, may be included. The sponge iron obtained may be finally comminuted into iron powder.
