1,255,255. Fluidic Switching devices. P. S. BAHRTON. 4 Feb., 1969 [6 Feb., 1968], No. 5987/69. Heading G4P. A fluidic switching device comprises block 11 with inlet 12 and two angled outlets 13, 14 clamped between opposed cover-plates; control or vortex chambers 15, 16 being interposed between the inlet and the outlets; and edges 17, 18 defining the transitions between the chamber and the outlets. Conduits 19, 20 containing valves 21, 22 are connected to the chambers, and a restriction 23, 24 is present at the transition of the inlet and the chambers. If valves 21, 22 are symmetrically operated, the fluid flow is divided between the outlets or passes through either at random. Closure of, e.g. valve 21 and opening valve 22 to atmosphere establishes by pressure differential a clockwise vortex in chamber 15, which co-operates with edge 17 to direct fluid to outlet 13. Reversal of the valves establishes a vortex in chamber 16 to direct fluid to outlet 14, so that the device is bi-stable. Alternatively the changeover conditions may be established by differential positive pressures between conduits 19, 20. Dimensioning of the restriction 23, 24 and the regions of the chambers adjacent edges 17, 18 are critical to produce abrupt changes of flow pattern; the transverse length of the restriction being 10 to 40% of the distance between the inner wall and centre axis of the inlet.
|
