PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel cyanine compound useful as an optical recording material and a color correction material. SOLUTION: The cyanine compound is shown by formula (I), the optical recording material and the color correction material use the compound (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-20C alkyl group; R<SP>2</SP>is a substituent combined with a nitrogen atom of phthalic imide by a methylene group or the like; Z<SP>1</SP>and Z<SP>2</SP>are each a substituent of H, an alkyl group or the like; Y<SP>1</SP>and Y<SP>2</SP>are each a substituent of an alkyl group or the like; a and b are each an integer of 0-4; An<SP>q-1</SP>is a q valent anion; q is an integer of 1 or 2; and p is a coefficient to keep charge neutral).
